Saint Basil's Salvatorian Center (also known as St. Basil the Great Seminary) is a Greek-Melkite Catholic seminary and spiritual retreat house at 30 East Street in Methuen, Massachusetts, in the Merrimack Valley. Run by the Basilian Salvatorian Order (B.S.O.), a Lebanese religious congregation whose charism is to teach, preach, form priests, and catechize the young, it is the only Salvatorian center in the United States. Founded in 1954 with the help of Boston's Cardinal Richard Cushing to preserve the Byzantine-Melkite traditions of the area's Lebanese and Syrian immigrants, the center today is home to a small community of Salvatorian priests and brothers who celebrate the Melkite Divine Liturgy, hear confessions, host retreats, and run the eparchy's Cursillo and marriage-preparation programs.

Saint Basil's Salvatorian Center, also known as St. Basil the Great Seminary, is a Greek-Melkite Catholic seminary and spiritual retreat house in Methuen, Massachusetts, run by the Basilian Salvatorian Order (B.S.O.). Founded in 1954 with the help of Cardinal Richard Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, it is the only Salvatorian house in the United States. The community is home to Basilian Salvatorian Fathers and brothers who pray the Divine Liturgy, hear confessions, and run retreat and formation programs open to the wider Melkite Catholic community.
History
The center was established in 1954 to train Melkite priests and preserve the Byzantine liturgical and cultural heritage of the Lebanese and Syrian Catholic immigrants who had come to work in the Merrimack Valley mills. In May 1979 the Salvatorians marked their Silver Jubilee with liturgies celebrated by Superior General Rt. Rev. Simon Nasre, B.S.O., and Archbishop Joseph Tawil, with Cardinal Medeiros presiding; Pope John Paul II sent a Special Apostolic Blessing for the occasion. The 50th anniversary was observed by the Eparchy of Newton in 2005.

The Salvatorian Community
The center is staffed by a small community of Basilian Salvatorian Fathers and brothers whose daily life follows a monastic rhythm of prayer, liturgy, manual work, and ministry. Each priest keeps his own schedule, rising early for personal prayer, celebrating or concelebrating the noon Divine Liturgy, then sharing meals, chores, and evening prayers together. The B.S.O. charism is to teach, preach, form priests, and catechize the young; the community is monastic but not cloistered, and members are active in parishes, hospitals, and prisons across New England.

Ministries and Retreats
St. Basil's runs the formation and retreat programs for the Salvatorians and opens them to the wider Melkite Catholic community. The flagship is the Cursillo Renewal movement, accompanied by Ultreya gatherings and the Teen Encounter weekends for youth. The Fathers also offer Pre-Cana marriage preparation under the title 'Transformed in Love', Christian Men's and Women's Retreats, and a Prison Ministry that brings Eastern Catholic spirituality to inmates.

Sacraments and Pastoral Care
The Salvatorian Fathers celebrate the Divine Liturgy daily and on Sundays and are available to hear confessions and provide spiritual direction, both at the center and at nearby parishes or convents. Marriage preparation is offered through the Pre-Cana 'Transformed in Love' program, and adults seeking Confirmation can enroll in the Adult Confirmation class. Brother Moe Pare serves as a hospital chaplain, praying with patients and families — work he describes as 'the most profound' ministry of his vocation.

Eastern Catholic Heritage
The center belongs to the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, one of the 23 Eastern Catholic churches in full communion with the Pope. The word 'Melkite' means 'followers of the king' — a reference to the Byzantine emperor who convened the Council of Chalcedon in 451; the Catholic branch split from the Orthodox in the 1720s. The Eparchy of Newton, with its cathedral at Our Lady of the Annunciation in West Roxbury, governs roughly 50 Melkite parishes across the United States. The Methuen Valley has been a center of Melkite life since the late-19th-century immigration of Lebanese and Syrian Christians to the region's textile mills.

Visiting and Contact
Visitors are welcome for the Sunday 10:00 AM Divine Liturgy and the Monday-night Liturgy (September through June). After Liturgy the community welcomes guests to Syrian bread with honey and zaatar in the kitchen.
