Patron Saint: Andrew Kim Taegon
The chapel takes its name from Saint Andrew Kim Taegon (김대건 안드레아), born 21 August 1821 in Solmou, Dangjin, Joseon (now South Korea), and martyred 16 September 1846 in Seoul at age 25. He was the first native-born Korean Catholic priest and the patron saint of Korean clergy. Ordained in Shanghai in 1844 by the French bishop Jean Joseph Jean-Baptiste Ferréol, he returned covertly to a Korea where Christianity was proscribed, faithfully serving underground Catholic communities before being captured and beheaded near the Han River. Pope John Paul II canonized him along with Paul Chong Hasang and 102 other Korean martyrs on 6 May 1984 during his papal visit to Korea.
