The Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton, New York, traces to an 1896 mission serving Irish Catholic immigrants on Long Island's East End. The Gothic Revival church, built of granite and faced with white marble, was completed in 1908 at a cost of about $100,000, funded by both Irish workers and wealthy summer residents. On November 11, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI elevated it to a minor basilica, the first on Long Island. It serves the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
