History
Catholics first arrived in the Tug Fork River area in the late nineteenth century. Rev. Emil Olivier of Bluefield began to visit the community in 1902, celebrating Mass in the home of P.H. Byrne. Established as a mission of Our Lady of Victory, Gary, construction on a church began in 1907 and was completed one year later. In 1911, Sacred Heart Mission was erected as a parish. Missions were established at Rawl, Chattaroy, and Thacker. The first Mass in the present church was celebrated on May 20, 1951. Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School was founded in 1957 and closed in 2011.
