Parish History & Formation
Transfiguration of the Lord Parish was canonically erected on January 1, 2020 by Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha of the Diocese of Fall River, who formally suppressed the three longstanding Catholic parishes of North Attleborough — Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Sacred Heart, and Saint Mark — and created a single new parish from them. The unification grew out of several years of collaboration: in 2014 Father David Costa was named pastor of both Saint Mary and Sacred Heart, and in 2017 he was also given Saint Mark, forming 'the Catholic Community of North Attleborough' with one pastoral team. In June 2019 Rev. Rodney Thibault was assigned to lead the formal unification process, and a Unification Assembly working with the Diocesan Office of Strategic Planning produced the blueprint for merger. Shortly after the new parish was born, the COVID-19 pandemic forced online-only worship from March through May 2020; Father Thibault and Father Jack Schrader broadcast live Masses from the parish chapel, and Holy Week and Easter that year were 'remote only.'
- Sacred Heart Parish established September 4, 1904 for the town's French-Canadian population; first pastor Rev. D. D. Villandre.
- Upper church of Sacred Heart completed in 1929.
- Rev. David Costa named single pastor of Saint Mary and Sacred Heart in 2014.
- In 2017 Father Costa also given Saint Mark, unifying the Catholic Community of North Attleborough.
- Rev. Rodney Thibault assigned June 2019 to lead unification process.
- Transfiguration of the Lord Parish canonically erected January 1, 2020 at 12:01 a.m.
- Live-streamed Masses launched during pandemic; in-person worship resumed with social distancing, masks, and reservations.
- Rev. David A. Costa returned as pastor in June 2023.
