Sacred Heart Church in Hallowell
Sacred Heart Church sits on Summer Street in Hallowell, a small historic city just south of Augusta on the Kennebec River. Founded in 1889 and long-serving the Catholic community of greater Hallowell, the church is now part of St. Michael Parish, a multi-site Catholic community headquartered in Augusta. History of St. Michael Parish
St. Michael Parish was canonically established on July 1, 2007, formed by the merger of five central Maine parishes: St. Mary of the Assumption in Augusta, St. Augustine in Augusta, St. Andrew in Augusta, St. Joseph in Gardiner, and St. Denis in Whitefield. In 2008, St. Francis Xavier in Winthrop (along with its mission community of St. Leo in Litchfield) joined St. Michael Parish. Later, due to ongoing budget constraints and a shortage of available priests, the churches of St. Andrew and St. Leo were closed.
