History of Sacred Heart Parish

Sacred Heart traces its roots to 1873, when the Harrison Township parish began recording baptisms for a community of German and Irish Catholic farmers in what is now the village of Sherwood. Marriages and funerals followed in 1875. The parish built a new cream-brick American Foursquare rectory at N341 Military Road in 1915 to replace an earlier frame building, and that rectory still stands today. In 1995 Sacred Heart was formally clustered with the historic St. John the Baptist parish (founded 1869 in the Town of Woodville) to form the combined St. John-Sacred Heart parish operating from two worship sites.

  • Baptisms recorded from 1873
  • Marriages and funerals from 1875
  • Sacred Heart Church Rectory built 1915 (American Foursquare, cream brick)
  • 1995: clustered with St. John the Baptist to form St. John-Sacred Heart

Together the parishes coordinate Mass schedules, faith formation, youth ministry, and outreach across the cluster.
