Sacred Heart Parish in Rosedale, Mississippi, was a small but deeply rooted Catholic community in the Mississippi Delta, just off Highway 1 near the river. Officially established in 1968, the parish carried forward a Catholic legacy in the area that reached back to the 1673 expedition of Father Jacques Marquette, SJ, and Louis Jolliet. For generations, Sacred Heart gathered families around the Eucharist, sacraments, and care for migrants and the incarcerated, before celebrating a final Mass on June 30, 2024, and closing its doors permanently in summer 2024. Its story remains a testament to faith, perseverance, and the bonds of a tight-knit Delta community.

Historical Origins
The Rosedale area's Catholic roots stretch to the 1673 expedition of Father Jacques Marquette, SJ, and Louis Jolliet, who traveled the Mississippi River and may have celebrated Mass near present-day Rosedale. Formal Catholic ministry resumed in 1888 when Father John Koerstenbroek of Greenville began visiting local Catholics, celebrating Mass in Edward Scott's home. The first recorded baptism, Norbert Scott, took place in 1894. For much of the early 20th century, Rosedale was served by priests from Our Lady of Victories in Cleveland.

Parish Life and Closure
Sacred Heart was formally established in 1968 with Father Tony Pudenz as its first resident pastor; the church building was dedicated in March 1971. The parish was later served by Msgr. Mike Flannery, Father Dan Gallagher, and Father P.J. Curley, and administered at times by Women Religious. Dr. James Tomek served faithfully as Lay Ecclesial Minister from 2010 to 2022. After his death, parishioners entered a period of discernment and ultimately decided to close. Bishop Joseph Kopacz joined SVD Fathers Sebastian Myladiyil and Tom Mullally for a final Mass on June 30, 2024, and the parish closed permanently in summer 2024.

Ministries and Outreach
Throughout its history, Sacred Heart emphasized outreach to the marginalized. Msgr. Mike Flannery launched a Hispanic ministry after mission experience in Mexico, and Women Religious serving the parish dedicated themselves to migrants and prison ministry. The parish also provided the ordinary sacramental life of the Church for its families.
