Why belong here
Sacred Heart is a close-knit rural parish where Catholics from across western and central Harvey County — Halstead, Sedgwick, Burrton, Bentley, and Moundridge — gather as one family under the patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The parish invests deeply in passing the faith to the next generation through Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for young children and a Sunday Parish School of Religion (PSR) program with breakfast provided by the Knights of Columbus, while also walking adults through OCIA, accompanying youth to diocesan and national conferences, and welcoming adults into Cursillo. With daily and weekend Masses, a robust reconciliation schedule, and clear stewardship of time, talent, and treasure, it is the kind of parish where a visitor can quickly find a ministry, a meal, and a place to belong.

Parish History
Catholic life in Halstead stretches back to 1884, when Rev. Bernard Schmiehausen built the town's first Catholic church and the community was formally recognized as a mission the following year. After early pastoral care from priests such as Rev. George Meyer (1890–1897) and Rev. Joseph Pompeney (1899–1902), the community was made a parish on February 17, 1912 under its first resident pastor, Rev. A. M. Weikmann. Weikmann oversaw construction of the present church, which Bishop Hennessy dedicated on April 18, 1917. The parish today celebrates 130 years as a Church in Halstead and serves the people of western and central Harvey County as part of the Diocese of Wichita.

The parish's mission statement frames its life: 'Sacred Heart is a family of Catholic disciples imitating the Heart of Jesus to obtain the ultimate goal of heaven. We aspire to serve the parish family and community through faith formation, sacraments & stewardship as we cultivate relationships with God and neighbor.' Faith Formation for Children
The parish runs two parallel tracks for children's religious education. During the school year, public-school children from Halstead, Sedgwick, Burrton, Bentley, and Moundridge attend Parish School Religion (PSR) at the Parish Center from 9:45am to 10:45am on Sundays, with breakfast hosted by the Knights of Columbus beginning at 9:15am. For its youngest learners, Sacred Heart adopted the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program in 2023–2024, currently serving pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade in a dedicated Atrium space.
- Parish School of Religion (PSR) — Sundays 9:45–10:45am
- Knights of Columbus Sunday breakfast at 9:15am
- Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) — pre-K, K, and 1st grade

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a reflective, Montessori-based program of religious formation that helps children ages 3–12 develop their relationship with God through Scripture, the Liturgy, and hands-on 'tangible' materials. Rooted in the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori and the earliest practices of the catechumenate, the program gathers children in a prayerful space called an Atrium. A typical day includes a presentation on grace and courtesy, Scripture, or Liturgy; a long period of self-directed work with materials; and a communal prayer time at the prayer table.
- Program rooted in Sacred Scripture, the Liturgy, and Maria Montessori
- Atrium is the dedicated prayer/learning space for the program
- Volunteer opportunities: simple woodworking, painting/staining, sewing/embroidery/crocheting, cutting & stapling, coloring & laminating

Thanks to the stewardship of the parish, children of Sacred Heart are able to attend area Catholic grade schools and high schools. The parish explicitly lists partner schools where tuition support flows.

Adult Formation — OCIA
For adults seeking full communion with the Catholic Church — or Catholics who have not yet received all the Sacraments — the parish offers OCIA, the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults. The parish invites anyone curious about Catholic belief, or already Catholic and preparing for the remaining Sacraments, to contact the parish office.
