History

Founded in 1888, Sacred Heart Parish began with Masses celebrated by Father August Reichert in 1879 or 1880. The diocese assigned a priest to build a church, and land was purchased in September 1888, with construction completed by December 23. The first resident pastor was assigned in 1906, and a rectory was built in 1910. A tornado destroyed the church in 1911; parishioners rebuilt it with insurance and community funds. A fire in 1954 destroyed the church again, prompting a move to a new location. Construction began in April 1955 and the church was dedicated in October 1956. Carillon bells were installed in 1963.
