Why belong here

Sacred Heart offers a faithful, close-to-home Catholic presence for the families of Norborne and surrounding Carroll County farmland, with weekly Sunday Mass at 9:45 a.m. and a Thursday morning Mass at 8:30 a.m. As part of the Catholic Churches of Carroll & Ray Counties cluster (with Saint Mary's in Carrollton and Immaculate Conception in Richmond), Sacred Heart members share in the sacramental life, faith formation, and pastoral care of a wider rural deanery while keeping their own historic 1888 brick church as a spiritual home. It's a small, steady rural parish where families can know one another and pass the faith to the next generation.

History of Sacred Heart Parish

Catholic life in Norborne began quietly in 1868, when Mass was offered in the town's railroad section house — the very first religious service held there. By 1871, priests traveling from Lexington were saying Mass in a small frame church on the grounds of the Catholic cemetery. The parish was formally organized in October 1878, and a brick church was constructed at a cost of four thousand dollars. That first brick church was destroyed by fire in 1888, but the congregation rebuilt it in the same year; the original bell was recast after the fire and continues to ring from the church today. In 1929 the parish added the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, which became a hub of civic life in Norborne.
