Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mound City, Kansas, is a small rural parish and the official Shrine of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, the first saint to have set foot in Kansas territory. Founded in 1941 and dedicated on September 7, 1942, the church was built as a memorial to Blessed Rose Philippine Duchesne by the Diocese of Leavenworth (now the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas) under Bishop Paul C. Schulte. Today it is served from St. Philip Neri Parish in Osawatomie as part of a three-parish cluster (with Our Lady of Lourdes in La Cygne), and continues to welcome Catholic families of Linn County along with pilgrims who come to venerate the saint who once ministered to the Potawatomi at the nearby Sugar Creek Mission.

The parish gathers for weekend Mass on Saturday evening, a Wednesday evening Mass, and Eucharistic Adoration every Sunday morning, and offers religious education for children and adults through the cluster's Totus Tuus summer program.

History of Sacred Heart Parish
The parish traces its origins to a 1937 observation by Bishop Paul C. Schulte that Linn County was the only county in the Diocese of Leavenworth with no Catholic parish or mission. After two years of street preaching in Linn County towns, Schulte launched a diocesan capital campaign to build a Shrine in Mound City as a memorial to Blessed Rose Philippine Duchesne. On June 27, 1941, he appointed Father William Gerald O'Shea as the founding pastor, and construction of a limestone church and rectory began that September. The new church was dedicated as Sacred Heart Catholic Church on September 7, 1942 — more than a century after the saint's arrival at the old Sugar Creek Mission.

Shrine of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne
The church is the official Shrine of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, a Religious of the Sacred Heart who, at age 71, came from St. Louis in 1841 to open a school at the Potawatomi Mission in what is now Linn County. Stained glass windows, a marble sanctuary, a statue, and original murals and Stations of the Cross — all depicting the life and ministry of St. Rose — are a central part of the Shrine's identity. Duchesne was declared Blessed in 1941 (the year construction began) and canonized in 1988, and visitors continue to make pilgrimages to both the church and the St. Philippine Duchesne Memorial and Historical Park roughly 13 miles to the northwest.

Buildings and Grounds
Beyond the original 1941–1942 limestone church and rectory, the parish added a church hall in 1992 in time for its Golden Jubilee. Dedicated as the St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Memorial Center, the hall hosts religious education and adult formation classes, parish and family gatherings, and serves as a place of rest and refreshment for pilgrims to the Shrine and the Duchesne Memorial Park.

Faith Formation and Totus Tuus
The cluster hosts the Totus Tuus summer catechetical program, a week-long program staffed by college students trained by the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. At Sacred Heart, Totus Tuus includes a day program for students entering grades 1–6 and an evening program for students in junior high and high school, with Mass, confession, adoration, games, fellowship, and snacks. The 2026 program at Sacred Heart is scheduled for July 19–24, 2026.

RCIA and Parish Growth
According to the parish's 75th-anniversary booklet and subsequent reporting in The Leaven, one of the most significant developments in the parish's recent history has been growth in converts through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program. The parish credits this outreach, along with dedicated catechists, as a major reason its number of families has more than doubled since the mid-20th century.

Because Sacred Heart is too small to support a resident pastor on its own, it is formally clustered with St. Philip Neri in Osawatomie and Our Lady of Lourdes in La Cygne under a single pastor. The cluster is identified in the Archdiocese's Southern Region Pastoral Plan as a model of collaboration among small parishes. Jubilee Year of Hope Pilgrimage Site
Sacred Heart has been designated by the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas as one of its official pilgrimage sites for the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope. As a church under the patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it joins other Sacred Heart parishes across the archdiocese in inviting the faithful to make a pious visit during the Jubilee year, with opportunities to schedule a tour of the church and of the nearby St. Philippine Duchesne Memorial Park.
