About Sacred Heart · Hopedale, Ohio

Sacred Heart is a small Roman Catholic parish serving the village of Hopedale in Harrison County, Ohio, and is one of three linked country parishes in the Harrison County Catholic Churches cluster — alongside St. Teresa of Avila in Cadiz and St. Matthias in Freeport. The parish belongs to the Diocese of Steubenville (Mother of Hope Deanery) and was established in 1945 to bring Mass and the Sacraments to Catholic families in and around Hopedale. Today it is served by the cluster pastor, Rev. Frederick Kihm, with Sunday Mass celebrated at 11:00 AM and a weekly Friday Mass at 12:15 PM. Confessions are heard in Hopedale immediately after the Sunday Mass.

Why belong here

Sacred Heart offers a quiet, close-knit Catholic community right in the village of Hopedale, with Sunday Mass at 11:00 AM and a weekday Mass on Fridays at 12:15 PM, plus the convenience of confessions heard right after the Sunday Mass in the same church. As part of the three-parish Harrison County Catholic cluster (with St. Teresa of Avila in Cadiz and St. Matthias in Freeport), parishioners also have easy access to additional weekend Mass times and devotions just down the road. Visitors and travelers passing through Harrison County are warmly welcomed at any of the cluster's three churches.

About Sacred Heart Parish

Sacred Heart is a small Catholic parish in the village of Hopedale, Ohio, founded in 1945 and now part of the Diocese of Steubenville. It shares its pastor and pastoral staff with two neighboring Harrison County parishes — St. Teresa of Avila in Cadiz and St. Matthias in Freeport — under the umbrella name "Harrison County Catholic Churches." The parish's Sunday Mass is celebrated at 11:00 AM, with a Friday Mass at 12:15 PM and confessions heard immediately after Sunday Mass.

Harrison County Catholic Cluster

Sacred Heart does not operate as a stand-alone parish office — it is served through the central parish offices in Cadiz, sharing one priest, one phone line, and one website with St. Teresa of Avila (Cadiz) and St. Matthias (Freeport). This arrangement is common in rural dioceses and allows each small church to keep its own identity and weekly Mass schedule while sharing clergy and administrative support.

  • St. Teresa of Avila — Cadiz, OH (parish offices here)
  • Sacred Heart — Hopedale, OH
  • St. Matthias — Freeport, OH
  • Single pastor: Rev. Frederick Kihm
  • Cluster phone: (740) 942-2211

Clergy and Staff

The Harrison County Catholic Churches cluster is led by a single pastor who serves all three parishes. Day-to-day parish contact is also handled through a parish administrative contact.

Diocese and Deanery

Sacred Heart is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville, which covers the Ohio Valley across eastern Ohio, and is grouped within the Mother of Hope Deanery. The diocese maintains a parish-finder page that lists Sacred Heart, Hopedale as an active parish in the cluster.

  • Diocese: Steubenville
  • Deanery: Mother of Hope
  • Diocesan parish-finder listing confirms Hopedale parish

Contact and Visit

In-person visits and inquiries are directed to the cluster's shared parish offices in Cadiz; telephone and email reach the pastor or parish contact directly. The parish's own website (the Harrison County Catholic Churches site) hosts the full schedule and a directions page for all three churches.

History

Sacred Heart was established in 1945 (per GCatholic's diocesan gazetteer) as a Catholic parish for the village of Hopedale and surrounding rural Harrison County. Like many small rural parishes of that era, it has historically been served by a priest shared with neighboring Catholic communities rather than a resident pastor of its own — a tradition that continues today under Rev. Frederick Kihm.
