Parish History
The history of the Roman Catholic parish in Hamilton dates back as far as 1869, when Father (later Bishop) John Hogan offered Mass in the Hamilton railroad depot. Before Sacred Heart Church was built, Hamilton was part of a vast mission stretching from Mexico and Macon east to Cameron west, with Mass offered only sporadically—about once every three months. Catholic families in the county, mostly railroad workers and Irish-American settlers from Rome, New York, hosted Mass in their homes for decades, with Father Francis Cullen of Cameron the most-requested celebrant. The first permanent church building, 30 x 60 feet of frame and stucco with a full basement, was dedicated on December 12, 1921. Sacred Heart is thus the first permanent Catholic church in Caldwell County, and its history includes the founding of the Legion of Mary under Father Miller, the building of an outdoor Sacred Heart shrine under Father North, and the construction of a new rectory under Father Rost.

- 1995 — Fr. Bob Kerr introduced guitar music at Mass; led parish into the 21st century.
- 2009 — Fr. Bob Rost arrives; demolishes old rectory and builds new one together with Mary Immaculate.

The Building and Its Features
The original 1921 church was a 30 x 60 foot frame-and-stucco building with a full basement, dedicated December 12, 1921. The lot adjoining it on the east provided space for a parish house. The present rectory was built under Fr. Bob Rost around 2009, replacing a much older rectory that had been an Episcopal church originally joined with wooden pegs. An outdoor Sacred Heart shrine was constructed under Fr. Orlis North after an earlier statue from St. Munchin parish deteriorated. A parking lot west of the church was purchased under Fr. Bob Kerr.
