History of Sacred Heart Parish
Sacred Heart was founded in 1882, the same year the town of Cotulla itself was platted on land donated by Joseph Cotulla. Local records show that Catholic priests visited the area from very early days to celebrate Mass for settlers, but the parish did not have a resident priest until 1933. The early Catholic records of Cotulla were destroyed by a fire in 1910, so the parish's first decades are mostly known from town histories rather than from sacramental ledgers. Sacred Heart was originally part of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and became part of the new Diocese of Laredo when it was erected on July 3, 2000 by Pope John Paul II.

Diocese of Laredo
Sacred Heart is a parish of the Diocese of Laredo, which was created on July 3, 2000 by Pope John Paul II. It was carved from portions of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the Diocese of Corpus Christi, covering the South Texas counties of Dimmit, Jim Hogg, La Salle, Maverick, Webb, Zapata, and Zavala. The diocese's first bishop was James A. Tamayo, and the formal installation took place at the Laredo Civic Center on August 9, 2000.
