Welcome to Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart Catholic Church is a parish in Clovis, New Mexico, situated on the far eastern plains of the state within the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The parish welcomes visitors with the message: 'If you're looking for God, we hope you find Him awaiting you with love in our beloved little parish.' Members encounter Christ in the sacraments and through worship, community, study, and service. The parish reaches the wider region through its bilingual Mass schedule and through its mission church, St. Catherine's in Melrose.

Our History

Sacred Heart's history is intertwined with the development of Curry County and the city of Clovis. The parish notes that Clovis sits on high, flat, almost treeless prairie land with no woods, lakes, or rivers — 'almost more Texan in culture, economy and growth than we are New Mexican.' Federal records list the parish (as Sacred Heart Catholic Community) with a ruling date of March 1946, marking its formal establishment as a religious corporation. Over the decades it has grown with the city and now extends pastoral care to surrounding rural areas through its mission at Melrose.

Clergy & Staff

The parish is led by Reverend Father Franklin Iwuagwu and supported by four deacons and parish staff. The team oversees worship, faith formation, and the day-to-day running of the parish.

  • Reverend Father Franklin Iwuagwu — Pastor
  • Reverend Mr. Juan A. Rodriguez — Deacon
  • Reverend Mr. Michael Rowley — Deacon
  • Reverend Mr. Eric Nelson — Deacon
  • Reverend Mr. Francisco Rodriguez — Deacon
  • Lora Rodriguez — Director of Religious Education

Faith Formation & Religious Education

Faith formation is a central ministry of Sacred Heart, grounded in the conviction — quoting St. John Paul II — that bringing children up in the faith is 'a work of prime importance.' The parish offers year-round programs for children, youth, and adults, with all teachers and aides serving as volunteers.

  • Religious Education for Grades K-5 (with Sacramental Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion)
  • Youth Ministry for Grades 6-12: Praise & Worship, Scripture, meditation, lessons applying Scripture to daily life, retreats
  • Confirmation Preparation: two-year program for students in grades 8-12
  • RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
  • Adult Faith Formation (Wednesday evenings, English and Spanish rotating)
  • Bible Studies

Adult Faith Formation

Adult Faith Formation is held on Wednesdays in the church and is open to everyone. Attendance is mandatory — four classes per year — for parents whose children are enrolled in 2nd grade, 3rd grade, Sacramental Prep I & II, Confirmation I & II, or RCIC. Classes rotate between English and Spanish throughout the formation year (November through March).

  • English Classes: November (6:00 PM), February, March (6:00 PM)
  • Clases en Español: December, January
  • Breaks observed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Ash Wednesday
