Parish History

Founded in 1959, Sacred Heart was created to serve the Catholic families of Petersburg and the surrounding rural reaches of Hale County during a period of post-war growth for the Diocese of Lubbock. The parish has remained a small but steady presence ever since. In 2023 the diocese restructured regional pastoral assignments, with Fr. Nahum Lopez named pastor ad interim, and on March 22, 2024, Rev. Josekutty "Thomas" Kadanthott was installed as the current pastor.

Faith Formation and Sacramental Preparation

Sacred Heart runs faith formation for both adults and families, coordinated by parish staff member Mary C. Gonzales. The parish uses the new name OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, the post-2022 Vatican update of the former RCIA process) for adults preparing to enter the Church, and offers a Whole Family Faith Formation program alongside the Parish Catechetical Leader (PCL) ministry for the parish's sacramental preparation needs.
