Sacred Heart Catholic Church is a parish in the small prairie town of Baileyville, Kansas, founded in 1912 by roughly fifty Catholic families who petitioned Bishop Thomas F. Lillis of the Leavenworth diocese. Today it is part of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and serves around 200 families across the surrounding rural area, in a clustered arrangement that also includes St. Mary's and St. Benedict parishes. The community gathers for Mass on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings, with weekday Masses on Wednesday and Thursday, and remains guided by its founding spirit of stewardship, worship, and charity.

History
Sacred Heart Parish traces its origins to an early-1911 meeting of devout Catholics at the home of Frank Broxterman, northeast of Baileyville. A petition signed by about fifty Catholic families was presented to Bishop Thomas F. Lillis of the Leavenworth diocese, who encouraged the building of a combined school and church. Father Joseph Hohe celebrated the first Mass in Marion Hall on March 10, 1912, and the first brick church was dedicated on October 22, 1912.

Architecture of the Present Church
The present-day church was designed in a modern Gothic style and constructed of concrete, stone and steel. It measures 147' long by 63' wide and features a buff-brick exterior trimmed with variegated Indiana limestone. Inside, the communion rail, side altar, baptismal font and holy-water fonts are all made of Red Levanto and Rose Travemello Italian marble, and the main floor is Mar-flex terrazzo poured over concrete.

Several historic structures continue to serve the parish alongside the present church. The original 1912 brick church still stands, and the 1924 'basement church' has been refurbished and is now used for junior-high classes. The 1913 rectory also remains on the property.

Sacred Heart Cemetery
Two acres were bought from John Dick for a cemetery, paid for by donations and the sale of lots. The first burial was Mrs. Gertrude Broxterman (wife of Frank Broxterman) on May 1, 1913. In 1918 an ore-bronze Crucifixion group on Bedford stone was erected in the cemetery, beneath which Father Joseph Hohe (d. Jan. 20, 1925) was laid to rest. In 1982, during the pastorate of Father Robert Pool, parish veterans installed thirty-eight flag poles in a double row through the center of the cemetery to create an Avenue of Flags — each flag bearing the name of a veteran at its base.

Sacraments
The parish celebrates the sacraments through its pastor, Fr. Regie. Baptisms are arranged by contacting the pastor; couples should notify the pastor at least six months before a wedding; and the anointing of the sick, Holy Communion to the homebound, and pastoral visits are available by calling the pastor.

Faith Formation & Religious Education
Sacred Heart offers religious education for children and youth through its CCD program held at the parish, and enriches adult parishioners through Bible studies and faith formation opportunities.

Parish Organizations & Ministries
Parishioners can become involved through several long-standing organizations. St. Anne's Altar Society (named for the patron of housewives) cares for the annual parish picnic, funeral dinners, Bingo with residents at two care homes once a month, and church cleaning and decorating. The Baileyville Knights of Columbus Council #13087 brings Catholic men together in charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism, supporting the parish through family-oriented programs.

Pastor — Fr. Reginald 'Regie' Saldanha
Fr. Regie is a missionary priest from Mangalore, in the State of Karnataka, South India, born December 23, 1965, one of ten children. He grew up in a devout Mangalorean Catholic family shaped by the 16th-century Portuguese missions and St. Francis Xavier's evangelization. After priestly formation he was ordained in 1997 and served seven years in Papua New Guinea before joining the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas in 2005. He became incardinated in the Archdiocese in 2008 and a U.S. citizen in 2015. His assignments have included Holy Trinity in Lenexa, parishes in Osawatomie/Mound City/LaCygne, and Ascension in Overland Park before being named pastor of Sacred Heart and St. Mary's parishes in October 2017.
