History
Catholic settlers arrived in 1879, and missionary Precious Blood priests began celebrating Mass in homes. The parish, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was founded in 1885 with a small frame church. In 1900, parishioners moved the church to a full block of land. The church was expanded in 1908 and 1924, and a new brick church was built from 1933–1938. A parochial school opened in 1954, closed in 1971. The Capuchin friary (1961) served the parish until 1986. Notable vocations include two Benedictine brothers: Father Gerard Senecal (president of Benedictine College, 1972–1987) and Abbot Barnabas Senecal (St. Benedict’s Abbey, 1994–present).
