Parish History and Establishment
Saint Katharine Drexel Parish was canonically established on January 8, 2017, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, by the Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh. It is a merged parish formed from five predecessor parishes: Ave Maria of Bentleyville, Saint Agnes of Richeyville, Saint Joseph of Roscoe, Saint Oliver Plunkett of Fredericktown–Marianna, and Saint Thomas Aquinas of California. Bishop Zubik appointed Reverend Edward Yuhas and Reverend Paul Grunebach as the first priests to serve the newly created parish. The parish takes its name and inspiration from Saint Katharine Drexel (1858–1955), a Philadelphia heiress who gave up her fortune, founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for the education of African and Native Americans, served her novitiate with the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh, and was canonized by Pope Saint John Paul II in the Jubilee Year 2000. She is the patron saint of racial justice and philanthropists.
