History of Resurrection Parish

Resurrection Parish was established on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1957, by His Eminence Richard Cardinal Cushing to serve the Catholic families of South Hingham and Rockland. Father John B. Welch arrived as the first pastor four days later, on April 25, 1957, and the church on Main Street was dedicated by Cardinal Cushing in April 1958 (the street beside the church, Father John Welch Drive, is named for the founding pastor). The parish grew rapidly with the post-war expansion of South Hingham and, like other parishes in the archdiocese, was reshaped by the Second Vatican Council — a parish council was instituted in 1968, and in 1969 the altar was moved forward to face the congregation, the lacy spires of the old high altar were removed, and a figure of Christ symbolizing both the Resurrection and the Crucifixion was placed on the teakwood paneling behind the altar. The parish marked its 50th anniversary in April 2007 with Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley joining ten priests — including two former pastors — for a Mass of Thanksgiving, a children's birthday party in Read Hall, and a dinner-dance at the South Shore Country Club.

The Resurrection–Saint Paul Collaborative

The Collaborative of Resurrection and Saint Paul Parishes became official on June 1, 2016. The collaborative relationship gives the two parishes the opportunity to do many things together — particularly evangelization, which the parish describes as sharing the Good News and the Gospel of Joy. The two parishes now share clergy, staff, and a unified schedule of Masses, Confessions, and Adoration. Resurrection's rectory and offices are at 1057 Main Street, while St. Paul's offices are open Monday–Thursday 9 AM–5 PM and Friday 9 AM–3 PM (781-749-0587); Resurrection's offices are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 AM–4 PM (closed Wednesdays), with all offices closed on weekends and federal holidays.

Clergy and Staff

The Collaborative is led by Very Rev. Thomas F. Nestor, VF, who has served as pastor of Resurrection and Saint Paul for over a decade and is a Harvard graduate and native of West Roxbury who previously pastored St. Eulalia's in Winchester for 17 years. He is assisted by three vicars — Rev. Marcelo G. Ferrari Melo, Rev. Michael J. McNamara, and Rev. Alphonsus Hien Quang Vu — and three deacons: Deacon Philip Anderson, Deacon Matthew A. Porter, and Deacon Joseph P. Harrington. Lay staff include Ms. Elizabeth Reardon (Pastoral Associate), Mr. Andrew J. Rondelli (Liturgy and Music), Ms. Terri Dasco (Faith Formation Coordinator), Ms. Carolyn Cooke (Youth Ministry), Jo-Ann Sullivan (Confirmation Director / LifeTeen), and Christine Lynch (Faith Formation Office Assistant).

Faith Formation (Grades K–7)

The parish runs a Family Faith Formation program for children in grades K–7, coordinated by Teresa (Terri) Dasco with assistance from Christine Lynch. Two-year preparation classes are required for candidates preparing to receive First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion; families whose Year 1 was completed at another parish must submit a letter of completion, and baptismal certificates are requested by December 15 for children not baptized at Resurrection or Saint Paul. First Reconciliation for the current cycle is scheduled for February 7, 2026, and First Holy Communion is celebrated May 2 and May 3, 2026. Calendars are published separately for Grades K–5 and Grades 6 & 7.

Youth Ministry — LifeTeen & Hingham Catholic Teen Ministry

Resurrection's signature youth ministry is LifeTeen, described on the parish website as 'Hingham's very own youth ministry program that serves to build a vibrant faith community for our teens through Weekly Mass, Life Nights, Holy Hours, Retreats, Service Events, Mission Trips, Outings and more.' Its mission is 'to seek, to know, to love and serve Jesus Christ, and to invite others into a joyful life with Christ.' Jo-Ann Sullivan serves as Confirmation Director for LifeTeen. After the Sunday 6:00 PM Teen Mass, all high school students (grades 9–12) are invited to the Hingham Catholic Teen Ministry / High School Youth Group, which explores an annual theme (for 2024–25 the theme was 'Freedom,' drawing on Galatians 5:13 and the teaching of St. John Paul II).

Liturgy, Music, and Devotions

Liturgy and music for the Collaborative is directed by Andrew J. Rondelli. The parish sustains a daily devotional life beyond the Mass schedule: the Daily Rosary is prayed together via Zoom, the Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed Sunday through Saturday 3:00–4:00 PM at St. Paul Lower Church, Healing Masses are scheduled periodically at St. Paul, and a Thursday-night Life Teen Holy Hour pairs Eucharistic Adoration with Confession. The parish publishes a Daily Mass and weekend schedule that reflects the realities of the Resurrection parking-lot reconstruction, during which all Resurrection Masses and sacraments are temporarily celebrated at Saint Paul.

Sacraments

The Collaborative celebrates all the usual Catholic sacraments. Baptism is prepared for with the parish staff, and baptismal certificates are required by December 15 for children entering First Communion prep who were not baptized at Resurrection or Saint Paul. First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion follow a two-year preparation track. Confirmation is prepared through LifeTeen and the Confirmation Director. Reconciliation (Confession) is available at six weekly time-slots across the two parishes, and Anointing of the Sick / Healing Mass is celebrated on scheduled evenings. Outreach and Community Life

Resurrection Parish describes itself as 'a loving community of believers living out the Gospel message of Jesus Christ,' led by Father Tom Nestor. Community life is centered on weekend fellowship events such as the weekly St. Paul Coffee & Donuts after the 10:00 AM Sunday Mass, seasonal celebrations like the anniversary dinner-dance at the South Shore Country Club, and ongoing service through the parish's youth service events, mission trips, and parish-school partnerships. The parish also participates in the wider Archdiocese of Boston Priests' Trust and senior-priest residence support, reflecting the community's care for its own clergy.

Hours, Location, and Visiting

Resurrection Church is at 1057 Main Street, Hingham, MA 02043-3995 (phone 781-749-3577). Resurrection's parish office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, closed Wednesdays as well as Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays. The Saint Paul office is open Monday–Thursday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM and Friday 9:00 AM–3:00 PM (781-749-0587). The site notes that the Resurrection parking lot is generally at most half full at weekend Masses (attendance 120–250 per Mass); during the parking-lot reconstruction project, all Masses and sacraments are temporarily celebrated at Saint Paul. For those wishing to worship from their car, Resurrection Masses are broadcast on 91.3 FM from the parking lot and Communion is brought to the side door.
