History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Founded 1956; church dedicated 1961

The Proto-Cathedral of St. Mary is a Ruthenian (Byzantine) Catholic parish in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, California, established in 1956 after the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh permitted a priest to minister in Los Angeles; the present church on Sepulveda Boulevard was dedicated in 1961. It was the first Byzantine church in California and served as the cathedral of the eparchy until 2010, when the eparchial see relocated to Phoenix and the building was redesignated a proto-cathedral. It remains an active parish serving the Ruthenian Catholic faithful of the Los Angeles area and is administered by the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix.
