About Precious Blood · Owensboro, Kentucky

Precious Blood Catholic Church is a Roman-Latin parish of the Diocese of Owensboro, Kentucky, located at 3306 Fenmore Street on the west side of Owensboro. Erected on August 25, 1960 by Bishop Francis R. Cotton and blessed the following month, the parish grew up with its own school (opened that same September with 244 students) and has served Catholic families on the city's northwest side for more than six decades. The parish lives out the mission statement, 'As a Parish we exist to feed hungry hearts and lead them to life in Jesus,' through daily and weekend Masses, Eucharistic adoration on Wednesdays, an active Knights of Columbus council, a St. Vincent de Paul Society, and a long roster of family, faith, worship, social, and spiritual life ministries. Weekday Masses and the Saturday vigil are livestreamed on the parish's Facebook page, and the parish participates in Owensboro Catholic Schools through the SCRIP program.

Why belong here

Precious Blood is a long-established west-side Owensboro parish with a clear evangelizing mission and a real rhythm of Catholic life — daily and weekend Masses (livestreamed on Facebook), Wednesday Eucharistic adoration from morning to night, weekly confession times on Saturday and Wednesday, a communal Rosary before Masses, and a monthly Anointing of the Sick. A newcomer can plug into parish life through more than a dozen lay-led ministries — Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Family Life, Faith & Education, Worship Life, Spiritual Life, and Social Ministry — and sacramental preparation for infants through adults (including RCIA on Monday evenings). For parents, the parish is tied into Owensboro Catholic Schools and supports tuition through the SCRIP program.

How Precious Blood Got Its Name

Most large projects of Bishop Cotton received Marian titles — Blessed Mother, Immaculate, Our Lady of Lourdes — so the choice of 'Precious Blood' surprised many. According to Father Maurice Tiell, the third pastor (and a key organizer of the new parish), the name was suggested to Bishop Cotton by Pope John XXIII during an ad limina visit. The Holy Father released 'On Promoting Devotion to the Most Precious Blood' the same year the parish opened, and there was a wider movement to restore the chalice to the laity during this period — all of which fit the parish's Christ-centered patronage.
