History

Founded in 1948 in Southeast Washington, D.C., Our Lady Queen of Peace grew as an urban parish serving a changing neighborhood. In the mid-1960s, the parish transitioned from a predominantly white congregation to a predominantly Black congregation and celebrated Mass in English for the first time amid the liturgical changes of the Second Vatican Council. The parish once operated its own grade school, and the former school building is now leased to Cornerstone School, whose rent supports parish initiatives. The community marked its diamond jubilee in 2023 with anniversary celebrations honoring senior parishioners.
