History

Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish was established on October 6, 1999, as a response to changing demographics and priest shortages. It was formed by merging Sacred Heart of Jesus (Polish) and St. John the Baptist (Slovak) parishes. The roots of these parishes trace back to 1914, when Father Ignatius Pilz was appointed the first resident pastor of Central City. Masses were initially held in private homes and Widomski Hall before the parish grew with immigrant workers. The parish reflects a rich heritage of faith, family, and Church life, shaped by coal-mining communities and ethnic traditions, and continues to evolve while honoring its past.
