About Our Lady of Victory

Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Lafayette in Louisiana, located at 120 Daigre Street in the village of Loreauville. It is the historic African-American Catholic parish of Loreauville, situated at the intersection of Daigre Street and Victory Drive. The parish belongs to the Roman Rite and celebrates Mass in English, and is pastorally twinned with neighboring St. Joseph Catholic Church in Loreauville.

History of the Parish

According to GCatholic, Our Lady of Victory was established in 1953 to serve the African-American Catholic faithful of Loreauville during the era of segregation. The present church building was erected in the 1970s to replace the original wooden church built for that community, and that earlier wooden structure was destroyed by fire in 1992. The parish shares its Catholic heritage in the village with St. Joseph Catholic Church, which had been raised to parish status on February 9, 1873, and is named for Ozaire Joseph Loreau, the settler who donated the property for the church and cemetery in 1871. In March 2021, Our Lady of Victory hosted a five-day Parish Mission led by the Fathers of Mercy.
