Devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary
As a parish named for Our Lady of the Rosary, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is woven into the parish's prayer life. The Rosary is prayed publicly thirty minutes before each Mass, and the annual patronal feast is celebrated on October 7. That date also recalls the older title Our Lady of Victory, instituted by Pope St. Pius V after the 1571 naval victory at Lepanto.
Patronal Feast and History of the Title
The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7 commemorates a tradition that holds the Blessed Virgin Mary revealed the rosary to St. Dominic de Guzmán in the early 13th century during his preaching against the Albigensian heresy. Although the earliest written account of that apparition dates from some three centuries later, Dominican promotion clearly helped the rosary flourish in popular Catholic devotion. In 1571, after the Christian fleet's victory at Lepanto was attributed to the praying of the rosary, Pope St. Pius V established the feast of Our Lady of Victory, later interchanging the title with Our Lady of the Rosary.
Liturgical and Sacramental Life
In addition to weekly Mass and Saturday confessions, the parish maintains a schedule of Eucharistic Adoration and observes traditional Lenten devotions including Stations of the Cross on Fridays. Pastoral care is extended through Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Baptism, Marriage preparation, and funeral liturgies (funerals at the parish have been celebrated by visiting priests assisting the diocese, including Fr. William Brown and Fr. Joe Pinchock).
