Vallecitos was settled around 1824 by Hispano stockmen moving into the upper Rio Grande after Governor Juan Bautista de Anza's late-18th-century campaigns tamed Apache and Comanche raiding in the region. The village, in what is now the Carson National Forest, grew around sawmills and small farms and once supported several houses of worship: the Catholic mission chapel (now Our Lady of Sorrows), an Evangelical/Protestant mission church and school (the building still stands, unused), a former Mormon meetinghouse, and a morada of the Penitente brotherhood (Hermanos de la Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno). Today the Catholic chapel is the only regularly operating church in Vallecitos. As a mission of San Juan Nepomuceno Parish in El Rito, it belongs to a network that, since 2017, has received preservation assistance from Cornerstones Community Partnerships.

Mother Parish: San Juan Nepomuceno, El Rito

Our Lady of Sorrows in Vallecitos is one of nine active mission chapels of San Juan Nepomuceno Parish, El Rito (1191 Main St., NM-554; parish office 575-581-4714). The parish's mother church, San Juan Nepomuceno, was begun c. 1827–1830 by the first Spanish settlers of the El Rito Valley and completed in 1832 in the traditional New Mexican cruciform adobe style, with five-foot-thick walls that originally doubled as a defensive fortification. Bishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy's French clergy later replaced the flat roof with a pitched one and a French-style altar, but the church largely kept its Hispanic character. A near-collapse in 1979 led to a major restoration completed by Christmas 1981/1982 that tried to recapture the original Spanish colonial artwork and spirituality; the building is described by historians as 'one of the most beautiful examples of historical New Mexican churches.'

Liturgy, Devotions and Visiting

Because the mission chapels are spread across a wide area, Masses and devotions are scheduled by rotation rather than weekly. Funeral rites remain a visible living tradition: local obituary notices document the rosary being recited the evening before the Mass of Christian burial, the funeral Mass itself being celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows in Vallecitos, and burial proceeding at the adjacent Vallecitos Catholic Cemetery. Visitors are encouraged to call the El Rito parish office at 575-581-4714 to confirm the current schedule for Mass, confession or any special devotion at the Vallecitos mission.

Vallecitos Catholic Cemetery

Immediately adjoining Our Lady of Sorrows Mission Chapel is the Vallecitos Catholic Cemetery (Find a Grave ID 2307356), located in the village of Vallecitos (La Madera postal area), Rio Arriba County, at coordinates 36.49065, -106.11860. The cemetery remains in active use and is closely bound up with the life of the chapel: traditional rosaries, Masses of Christian burial and interments are conducted there for Vallecitos and surrounding communities. It sits within the wider network of Catholic cemeteries serving the El Rito deanery (the related Cañon Plaza Catholic Cemetery, for instance, is similarly catalogued).

Community and Cultural Context

Vallecitos is a small, predominantly Catholic Hispano village in the Carson National Forest. As of the late 2010s, social activity still revolved around the village's churches and institutions, including a community library housed in a former mercantile/bar that was built up in phases largely by the 1920s. The El Rito parish's many events and gatherings connected to the wider cluster of mission churches — including Our Lady of Sorrows in Vallecitos — are frequently hosted at the library. The Catholic chapel is the only one of the village's historic churches still operating, and it continues to anchor community identity in a village whose population peaked at more than 500 in the sawmill era.
