Our Lady of Prompt Succor is a Catholic parish in Chackbay, an unincorporated Cajun community in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, served by the Diocese of Houma–Thibodaux. The parish was canonically established in 1892 and its present church on LA Highway 20 was dedicated on June 10, 1951. Today it offers three Sunday Masses, a daily weekday Mass schedule, a robust Youth Formation program, OCIA for adult initiation, and a devotional life that includes First Saturday Mass, Holy Hour with Exposition on Thursdays, and the Liturgy of the Hours. About Our Lady of Prompt Succor

Our Lady of Prompt Succor (OLOPS) is a Roman Catholic parish in Chackbay, an unincorporated Cajun community in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, within the Diocese of Houma–Thibodaux. Established in 1892 and housed in its current church since the June 10, 1951 dedication, the parish serves the rural faithful along Bayou Lafourche and the surrounding bayou country. The current administrator is Father Brice Higginbotham, who returned from Rome in the summer of 2024. The parish is identified by its Marian patroness, Our Lady of Prompt Succor — a devotion cherished throughout South Louisiana.

History

Catholic life in Chackbay predates the formal parish by nearly two decades: a chapel associated with the community dates from 1873. According to GCatholic's records, the parish itself was canonically established in 1892. The present church, on Louisiana Highway 20, was dedicated on June 10, 1951. Pastors who have served the community include Father Roland Timbre and Father Charles Menard, both listed on the Lafourche Parish LAGenWeb project. The patroness, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, links this parish devotionally to a wider network of South Louisiana Marian parishes.

Pastor and Staff

Father Brice Higginbotham is the current Administrator (pastor) of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Born and raised in Church Point, Louisiana — on the Cajun Prairie — he was ordained a priest on June 3, 2017 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. After ordination he served as pastor of Holy Cross Parish and chaplain to Central Catholic School in Morgan City, and as parochial vicar of Christ the Redeemer Parish in Thibodaux. He then spent three years in Rome earning a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (S.S.L.) before returning in summer 2024 to lead OLOPS Chackbay. Father Brice is the author of Daily Lessons from the Saints (2020) and Remaining with Jesus: Discipleship in the Gospel of John (2023).

Faith Formation & Youth

OLOPS Chackbay runs a yearly Youth Formation registration cycle (typically June 2 – August 2 for the 26-27 academic year) for parish children. The parish also has dedicated volunteer teams for Adult Formation, Youth Formation, and Outreach, all of whom can sign up through the parish's online Ministry Forms. OCIA — Becoming Catholic

Adults seeking the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) are invited into the parish's OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) process. Inquiries go to the OCIA Coordinator at [email protected] or via the parish interest form. The OCIA process follows the diocesan and universal Church norms for formation, discernment, and reception of the sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

Baptism Preparation

Baptism at OLOPS Chackbay is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month during the 10:00 am Mass. Parents and godparents are required to attend a monthly baptismal seminar; a letter of attendance is accepted in lieu of the seminar if completed at another Catholic parish within the last five years. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, at least 16 years of age, and have received Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion. A $10 baptismal stipend is encouraged to defray formation materials.
