History of the Parish

The parish was founded as a mission in Wichita's North End neighborhood under the leadership of Fr. Jose Serrano, with construction of its first church building beginning in 1927 at 23rd and Market. Through the 1930s, Franciscan friars shepherded the growing mission; an elementary school was added in 1935 and a larger church was completed in 1937. The school educated Catholic children through eighth grade and served as the main Catholic school for Mexican families in the area. The parish has remained both a sacred and a social institution, with the women of the church traditionally organizing food sales to support the congregation.
