History of Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Our Lady of Perpetual Help was founded on April 13, 1913 by the Redemptorist Fathers, who established the parish to minister to the eastern outskirts of San Antonio — an area then described as neglected because it was predominantly Mexican and Mexican-American. The parish grew through the 20th century to include a school and rectory (later demolished), and in the 1970s it was briefly merged as a mission of St. Gerard's Catholic Church until Archbishop Patrick Flores restored its independent parish status after community outcry. Father Daniel Cisneros, the first priest assigned to the parish by the Archdiocese of San Antonio after the Redemptorists, has described the community as 'grassroots' — a place where many members remain connected by family ties, compadrazgo, and decades of shared life on the east side. In April 2013 the parish celebrated its centennial with Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller.

Long-time parishioner Luanne Tapia has described it as a parish where 'a lot of people are related, whether they're relatives or compadres or comadres,' a closeness that the parish has nurtured for more than a century. The parish is currently twinned with Holy Redeemer Parish, with the same priest serving both communities.
