History of the Parish

OLPH was established as a parish in 1947 at 5614 W Orangewood Avenue in Glendale; the current church was dedicated in 1973. Growth was rapid: Fathers Leo Gattes and Charles Towner invited the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1950 to operate a parish school on the original 55th Avenue property. Crowding led to groundbreaking on new classrooms on May 3, 1953, at the Orangewood and 57th Avenue site, with the first classes opening September 14, 1953. The convent was completed in July 1954 to house the teacher-nuns.
