Catholicism in the U.S. Virgin Islands
Catholicism in what is now the U.S. Virgin Islands dates to the 1700s, when Danish-ruled St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John fell under the Catholic jurisdiction of the Diocese of San Juan in Puerto Rico. The first Catholic building on St. Thomas opened in Charlotte Amalie in 1802, and after the United States purchased the territory from Denmark in 1917 the local church continued to grow, eventually receiving its own prelature (1960) and diocese (1977).

Parish Life & Special Events
Our Lady of Perpetual Help is used not only for weekly parish worship but also for special ecclesial gatherings. In April 2021, for example, the Order of Malta's U.S. Virgin Islands Area hosted its third annual 'Lourdes in a Day' celebration at the parish, an event that combined Adoration, the Rosary, Confessions, Benediction, Mass (celebrated for the intention of Bishop Herbert Bevard), Anointing of the Sick, and the distribution of Lourdes water. The event brought together local deputy chaplain Fr. Eduardo Ortiz-Santiago and visiting chaplains from outside the territory, illustrating the parish's role as a gathering point for the wider Catholic community in the Virgin Islands.
