History
Alpine was established in 1882 with the railroad's arrival and renamed Murphyville in 1888 after Irish-Catholic Daniel Murphy and his son Thomas donated land for the church. Our Lady of Peace was founded in 1888, initially holding services in a freed slave's home before constructing an adobe church in 1902 named Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. In 1926, it became known as Our Lady of Peace. The current church was built starting in 1942 with parishioners collecting $10,000 during WWII to fund construction using native stone from a Toronto quarry. A chapel named Our Lady of Fatima was dedicated in 1951 for those without transportation.
