About Our Lady of Mount Carmel · Jersey City, New Jersey

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Newark, located at 99 Broadway in the Marion section of Jersey City, New Jersey. Founded in 1905 to serve Italian immigrants settling on the city's West Side, the parish has grown into a multi-ethnic faith community that today welcomes people of all backgrounds. It is best known for its annual Italian Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (July 13–16), a tradition started by immigrant parishioners in 1910 that still draws generations of families to a procession through the neighborhood. Current pastor Rev. Pedro Repollet leads the parish alongside Parochial Vicar Rev. Tomasz Mazurek, offering Masses in English and Spanish, religious education for children and adults, and a range of parish ministries.

About Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Newark, located at 99 Broadway in the Marion section of Jersey City, New Jersey. The parish's own mission statement describes it as a 'vibrant, welcoming and faith-filled community,' guided by the Holy Spirit and centered on Word and Sacrament, called by Baptism to serve as disciples of Jesus Christ. Founded in 1905 to serve Italian immigrants, it now welcomes people of all ethnic backgrounds and offers Mass and faith formation in both English and Spanish.

History

The parish was established in 1905 in the Marion neighborhood of Jersey City's West Side to minister to Italian immigrant families. According to local historical reporting, it was founded by Father Ernest J. Monteleone, who would later become Monsignor and who also founded Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in 1913. The Italian feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel — a devotional celebration honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Mount Carmel — was begun by the immigrant parishioners in 1910 and has continued nearly every year since, becoming the defining tradition of the parish and the neighborhood.

Sacraments & Religious Education

The parish prepares children and adults for the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation, and welcomes adults seeking to become Catholic through the RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). A Children-RCIA track is also available for children not baptized before the age of reason (7). First Communion, Confirmation, and Children-RCIA classes meet on Sunday mornings in both English and Spanish; adult formation times are flexible and arranged with the catechist.

Devotions & Prayer Life

Beyond the Sunday and weekday Mass schedule, Our Lady of Mount Carmel sustains a lively devotional life. Spanish-speaking parishioners gather on Thursdays after the 7:15 PM Mass for the charismatic prayer group, and Fr. Pedro Repollet leads a monthly charismatic assembly in the parish hall. The Rosary Altar Society meets after the 9:00 AM Mass on the first Sunday of each month, and an English-language Bible Study with Fr. Tomasz is held on Monday evenings in the Parish Hall.

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Each year from July 13 to 16 the parish celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a tradition started by its Italian immigrant founders in 1910 and now in its second century. The four-day celebration includes the Feast Day Mass on July 16 (livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube), a procession through the Marion neighborhood and Journal Square area of Jersey City, and community festivities with music, food, and fireworks. It remains one of the signature Italian-American religious feasts in Hudson County and a moment when multiple generations of local families gather at their parish church.
