History & Heritage
Our Lady of Lourdes grew out of the pioneering Catholic education work of Mother Joseph and the Sisters of Providence, who arrived at Fort Vancouver in 1856. With Providence Academy closing, the school now known as Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School opened in April 1956 with nearly 450 students, and the parish was formally established in 1958 with Father Dillon as its first pastor. The Sisters of Providence staffed the school for nearly two decades; Sister Mary Leona Miller taught first grade until 1991 and, with Father Dillon, is honored through a lasting tuition-assistance fund.
