History of the Parish

Our Lady of Lourdes was dedicated in 1962, making the building over sixty years old. For nearly six decades the structure was essentially unchanged, and parish life had long outgrown the original footprint — a tiny narthex that held five or six people, no interior restrooms (parishioners had to walk across the parking lot to the parish hall), and a sanctuary at capacity for the growing community, especially among Spanish-speaking Catholics.

  • 1962: Church dedicated
  • 2021: First expansion in 59 years blessed by Bishop J. Mark Spalding on Oct. 24

The 2021 Expansion

After Father Anthony Lopez arrived as pastor, a long-discussed expansion finally moved forward. Bishop J. Mark Spalding announced a $160,000 matching grant from the Diocese of Nashville. Ground was broken April 28, construction began May 3, and Bishop Spalding blessed the finished addition on Oct. 24. Architect John F. Werne III of Ashland City designed the project; Five Star Building Group of Springfield was the contractor. The parish raised $171,900 — exceeding its $150,000 goal — and the project was expected to be fully paid off from fundraising, parish savings, and the diocesan grant.

  • New narthex / gathering space
  • Interior men's and women's restrooms
  • Bride and groom ready room (also used for Quinceañeras)
  • Cry room with TV monitors
  • Additional seating for 45–50 people
  • Glass-front entrance with illuminated Lourdes-style grotto wall and statue of the Blessed Mother

The Story of Lourdes and Saint Bernadette

Our Lady of Lourdes is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary recalling her apparitions in 1858 at the grotto in Lourdes, France, to fourteen-year-old Saint Bernadette Soubirous. Our Lady instructed Bernadette to dig in the ground, from which a spring with healing properties emerged — still active today. The Catholic Church approved the apparitions for devotion in 1862, and the 69th approved miracle at Lourdes was recognized in July 2013. The statue of Mary in the sanctuary of the church, to the left of the altar, in white robes with a blue sash and a golden rose on each foot, is a representation of the Lourdes image of Our Lady as she appeared to Saint Bernadette.
