Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Tyler

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Spanish-language Catholic parish at 922 Old Omen Road in Tyler, Texas, in the Diocese of Tyler. The parish is named for the Marian apparition of 1531 and serves a vibrant Hispanic Catholic community in East Texas. It celebrated the consecration of a newly built church after years of community fundraising, and continues today with daily Mass, regular confession, and a small but active formation and prayer-life program.

Parish History and the New Church Building

The parish was established in 1996 to minister to Spanish-speaking Catholics in Tyler, within the Diocese of Tyler. For decades the community worshipped in a small sanctuary on Old Omen Road that frequently left worshippers standing outside Mass. The parish undertook a major capital campaign, raising about $2 million over more than five years to construct a new church on the parish grounds, which was formally consecrated by newly appointed Diocese of Tyler Bishop Gregory Kelly. The older church building is now used for faith formation, including catechism (Sunday school) classes for children.

  • Parish established 1996
  • $2 million raised over 5+ years for new building
  • New church consecrated by Bishop Gregory Kelly of the Diocese of Tyler
  • Seating capacity increased to approximately 600 worshippers

Parish Ministries and Prayer Life

The parish supports a small set of lay ministries organized through its website. The Renovación Carismática (Charismatic Renewal) hosts a steering-group meeting on Mondays at 7:00 PM and a prayer group on Fridays after the 7:00 PM Mass. Grupos de Danzas (parish dance groups) also meet on parish grounds, supporting liturgical and devotional celebrations.

  • Renovación Carismática — Fridays after the 7:00 PM Mass (prayer group)

Faith Formation and Catechism

Religious education for children is one of the central formation programs at the parish. Following the consecration of the new church, the original sanctuary on the property was dedicated to the catechism (Sunday school) program. Children gather in that building to learn the Word of God, easing overcrowding in the main sanctuary and giving the faith-formation program a dedicated home.

  • Faith formation held in the legacy church building

Clergy and Pastoral Leadership

Our Lady of Guadalupe is led by Father Jessie (Rev. Jesus R.) Arroyave, who has served as pastor of the parish for more than a decade. He presided over the dedication of the new church building alongside Bishop Gregory Kelly of the Diocese of Tyler. Parishioners and local press describe his tenure as one of steady growth and community-building.
