Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of the New Evangelization Parish (Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Estrella de la Nueva Evangelización) is a Roman Catholic territorial parish in the Diocese of Columbus, Ohio, housed in the historic 1927 Holy Name Church building at 154 E. Patterson Avenue in Old North Columbus, just north of The Ohio State University. Formed on September 1, 2023 by the merger of Holy Name Parish with the personal Spanish-speaking parish of Santa Cruz, the parish serves a large Latino Catholic community alongside English- and Portuguese-speaking faithful, and was designated a diocesan shrine on November 18, 2024 by Bishop Earl K. Fernandes. Known for its Byzantine-Romanesque architecture, perpetual Eucharistic adoration, frequent confessions, Cenacle devotion of the Marian Movement of Priests, and Marian pilgrimage life, it is the spiritual home of Father Antonio Carvalho, who was simultaneously named national director of the Marian Movement of Priests USA in August 2025.

History of the Parish
The community traces its origin to Holy Name Parish, founded on May 3, 1905 by Bishop James J. Hartley in Old North Columbus. Father William McDermott built the first combined church/school, led the parish through the First World War era, and began the foundation of the current church before his death in June 1922. Monsignor John O'Neil then reworked the plans into the present Byzantine-Romanesque design with architect Edward Ramsey. In 2001 the parish welcomed the Spanish-speaking personal parish of Santa Cruz from Holy Cross downtown, and on September 1, 2023 Bishop Earl K. Fernandes merged the two communities into Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of the New Evangelization. The church was designated a diocesan shrine on November 18, 2024.

Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
On November 18, 2024 Bishop Earl K. Fernandes formally decreed the church a diocesan shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of the New Evangelization, describing it as 'a tangible reminder of the love of God the Father in the hearts of the Christian faithful and that the faithful are a people continually on pilgrimage.' The decree cited both the architectural beauty of the 1927 Byzantine-Romanesque church and the rich sacramental and devotional life already active there — particularly the frequent offering of Confession and Eucharistic Adoration, which draw pilgrims from across the city. In March 2025 the Vatican's Office of the Apostolic Penitentiary further approved the parish as an official pilgrimage site for the Pontevedra Jubilee (100th anniversary of the apparitions to Venerable Sister Lucia dos Santos in Spain), granting a plenary indulgence to anyone fulfilling the Five First Saturdays devotion on five consecutive months at the parish through December 2026. The shrine was also a designated pilgrimage site for the worldwide 2025 Jubilee of Hope.

Architecture of Holy Name Church
The church is a Byzantine-Romanesque building designed by parishioner-architect Edward Ramsey, who donated the design work. The original Gothic plans of Father McDermott's 1921 foundation were abandoned as too expensive after his 1922 death, and Monsignor John O'Neil engaged Ramsey to rework the design in the current idiom. The completed church was dedicated on September 11, 1927 and was immediately acclaimed for its beauty by Bishop Hartley, a judgment echoed by Bishop Fernandes in 2024. Notable interior features include an ornate plaster ceiling, stained-glass windows restored in the 1980s, and a marble altar from Mount Carmel West Hospital installed in June 1983.

Marian Devotions and the Cenacle
Father Carvalho, a member of the Marian Movement of Priests since 1983 and its newly named USA National Director as of August 15, 2025, has built the parish's devotional life around the MMP Cenacle, the First Saturday devotion, and the Rosary prayed before the exposed Blessed Sacrament. The weekly Cenacle Mass on Tuesday evenings draws on the 'Blue Book' messages of the MMP and includes a Marian consecration prayer. On First Saturdays, the Cenacle is held in the Adoration chapel from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, observing the five conditions revealed at Pontevedra in 1925 — confession, Communion, five decades of the Rosary, 15 minutes of meditation on the mysteries, and the intention of reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Parish Ministries and Outreach
The parish runs a substantial faith formation program out of the former Holy Name School building, which since 2001 has also housed a clothing bank and food pantry serving the surrounding Latino community. Among the active lay groups are the Emmaus Men's Group, a hospitality team of greeters and ushers, lectors, catechists and catechist assistants, and a rosary-and-prayer community that meets regularly in the church and chapel.

Clergy and Staff
Father Antonio Carvalho is the current pastor and Vicar Forane of the North High-Northland Deanery (Vicariate #8) of the Diocese of Columbus. Italian-born and ordained in 1993, he has been in the United States since 2000 and in the Diocese of Columbus since 2006. A member of the Marian Movement of Priests since 1983, he was named MMP-USA National Director on August 15, 2025. He is supported in diocesan leadership by Bishop Earl K. Fernandes, the 13th Bishop of Columbus.

Pilgrimage and Visiting
As both a diocesan shrine and an officially recognized Vatican pilgrimage site, the parish welcomes visitors and pilgrims from across central Ohio and beyond. The decree erecting the shrine specifically encourages 'frequent pilgrimages' to ask for the protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe and to honor the Holy Name of Jesus. Through December 2026, those who complete the Five First Saturdays devotion (confession, Communion, five decades of the Rosary, 15 minutes of meditation with the intention of reparation) on five consecutive First Saturdays at the parish may receive a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions. The parish sits just north of The Ohio State University campus in Old North Columbus, with parking on-site around the church and former school.

Purchased eighteen lots on East Patterson Avenue, said the first Mass on June 4, 1905 over a High Street hardware store, broke ground on the first church/school on July 3, 1905, founded a Newman Club for Ohio State Catholic students, and began the foundation of the current church in April 1921. Died in office in June 1922.
