Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Catholic parish in South Hutchinson, Kansas, in the Diocese of Wichita, serving both English- and Spanish-speaking Catholics in Reno County. Originally established in 1927 as a mission to St. Teresa's Church for Mexican families in the Hutchinson area, it moved to its present site in 1963 and dedicated the current church and parish hall on March 28, 1965. Today the parish counts 548 families (about 1,644 individual Catholics), offers Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist, and celebrates Mass in English and Spanish every weekend.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the only parish in the Hutchinson area celebrating a regular Sunday Mass in Spanish (12:00 PM) alongside its English Masses, making it the spiritual home of Reno County's English- and Hispanic-speaking Catholics alike. With Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist running continuously since 1995, a historic outdoor shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and an active slate of formation programs (PSR, OCIA, Bible Study, ACTS, Cursillo, Encounter Matrimonial, EMAUS, and Adult Education), it offers a richly bilingual and devotional parish life.

Our Story: From Mission to Parish (1927-1965)
Our Lady of Guadalupe began in 1927 as a mission to St. Teresa's Church for Mexican families in the Hutchinson area, giving them a place to keep the culture, tradition and heritage of their Catholic faith alive. As the parish grew through the 1950s and the surrounding neighborhood industrialized, Bishop Mark Carroll and pastor Fr. Francis Cox led the search for a new site. In December 1963 the parish purchased 9.9 acres in South Hutchinson for $10,500, and the new church and parish hall were dedicated on March 28, 1965.

Building the Campus: Improvements & Landmarks
The 9.9-acre campus has grown steadily since 1965. Two ball diamonds were added east of the parish hall between 1975 and 1978, the parking lot was paved and lit in 1979, classrooms and a tractor room were added to the hall in 1984, and the church bell tower — with bells installed May 11, 1990 — was dedicated on June 3, 1990.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
The parish's outdoor shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is an outstanding ceramic on a concrete base, with a set of pictures depicting the miracle at Tepeyac Hill. Erected in May 1982 and dedicated on December 12, 1982 — the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe — it is considered one of the largest and most beautiful shrines of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Kansas.
The 1994 Renovation and the Tepeyac Murals
Between June 27 and December 12, 1994, the church interior was renovated with new stained-glass windows. The lower windows depict the Glorious Mysteries and the Joyful Mysteries, with two additional windows for Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of Lourdes. The upper windows tell the story of the Catholic Church in the Western Hemisphere, including saints from North and South America. Hand-carved statues of St. David Roldan and the Holy Family (carved in Mexico) were placed in new prayer niches. In the summer of 2000, Fr. Ned Blick took a group of young people on a mission trip to Monterrey, Mexico, where they worked with the Catechetical Sisters of the Poor. Mexican artist Cesar Ramirez Verdin repaid the visit by traveling to South Hutchinson to paint four large interior murals depicting Mary's apparitions to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill — described as the largest artistic representations of the Guadalupe apparitions in Kansas.
Faith Formation & Religious Education
Our Lady of Guadalupe offers a full formation program for children, adults, couples and Spanish-speaking parishioners. PSR (Parish School of Religion) prepares children for sacraments, while OCIA — Order of Christian Initiation for Adults — welcomes those preparing to enter the Catholic Church. Adult Education and Bible Study round out the ongoing learning opportunities.

Spiritual Movements and Retreats
The parish is home to several Catholic movements that deepen prayer and community life: ACTS retreats (Adoration, Community, Theology, Service), the EMAUS movement, Cursillo weekends, and Encuentro Matrimonial for married couples.

Parish Staff and Outreach
Day-to-day parish operations are supported by Pastor Fr. Eric Weldon and the office staff, including a Bookkeeper, Parish Secretary, Data Entry, and Carmen Hill. The parish also hosts the St. Rose of Lima Financial Outreach Program, reachable on Extension 1 of the parish phone, offering financial assistance to those in need.

Beyond Mass and the sacraments, Our Lady of Guadalupe is a community with a full calendar: weekly Bible Study, ongoing reflections from Father Weldon, and the OLG Fiesta — the annual parish festival featuring a free concert, street dance, raffle and fireworks.
