History
Founded in 1939 by Archbishop Rudolph A. Gerken, Cristo Rey Catholic Church was originally described in the book 'Cristo Rey, A Symphony in Mud,' written by Rev. Daniel W. Krahe. The church is an architectural masterpiece inspired by John Gaw Meem and stands as one of his finest works. The parish has evolved into a multicultural, multi-generational community rich in tradition and active in faith formation and service.
Sacraments
The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. The Church has defined seven sacraments — Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, and Holy Orders — through which grace is imparted and faith is strengthened.
Marriage
The sacrament of marriage is a covenantal union in the image of the covenants between God and his people. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church. The Church teaches that marriage is indissoluble and that remarriage after divorce contravenes the plan and law of God, though such individuals remain in communion with the Church and are called to live Christian lives, especially by educating their children in the faith.
Baptism
Baptism ushers us into the divine life, cleanses us from sin, and initiates us as members of the Christian community. It is the foundation for the sacramental life. Water is poured in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The sacrament is often performed on infants, with adult baptisms occurring at the Easter Vigil. Those baptized in a valid Christian church are not baptized again in the Catholic Church.
