History

Founded in 1926 by the Franciscans, Our Lady of Guadalupe parish was established to serve the growing Catholic population in Laredo. The Franciscans also founded Scotus College, a seminary, which operated until 1952. The parish has been a cornerstone of the community through decades of change, offering refuge to clergy fleeing persecution in Mexico during the 20th century. It remains active today with a strong emphasis on faith formation, community service, and bilingual worship.

Ministries

The parish offers a wide range of ministries to serve its diverse community, including Religious Education for Children, Adult RCIA, Youth Group, Altar Servers, Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion, Music Ministry, Adoration Nocturna, Altar Society, Liturgical Committee, Hospitality, Guadalupanas, Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #1989, Sociedad de Santísimo Sacramento, Women’s Prayer Group, Men’s Prayer Group, Stewardship, Communications, Jamaica Committee, Martha’s/Lazarus Committee, Los Discípulos de Jesús, and Bereavement Ministry.

Sacraments

The parish offers all seven sacraments: Baptism, Marriage, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders. Baptisms are held every 2nd Saturday at 10:00 AM, and marriage preparation is available for couples planning to marry in the church, requiring at least 6 months’ notice and an interview with the priest who will officiate the wedding.
