History of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish (Parent Parish)
The rural missions around Odem and Edroy owe their existence to the early missionary priests who served the area from San Patricio. According to Sacred Heart's own parish history, from 1830 to 1929 priests — including Father Miguel Pulg — traveled on horseback from San Patricio to offer Mass and the Sacraments to scattered Catholic families. Between 1919 and 1920, the first church structure in Odem was built and named Sacred Heart Mission. In 1934, it was elevated to a parish, with Father Pulg as its first pastor. The present Odem church was built in 1960 under Father Hubert Adam, with much of the labor donated by parishioners themselves. A rectory followed in 1982, a parish hall in 1983, and a Religious Education Center in 1985 under Monsignor Joseph Alverado, the latter funded in part by the Kennedy Memorial Foundation.

Our Lady of Guadalupe — Patroness
The mission takes its name from Our Lady of Guadalupe, the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Mexican St. Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City in December 1531. Our Lady of Guadalupe is venerated as the patroness of Mexico and of all Mexican Catholics, and her feast day is celebrated each year on December 12. Naming this small South Texas mission after Guadalupe reflects the deep Hispanic and Mexican-American Catholic heritage of the region.
