Our Lady of Grapes Chapel at the Meritage Resort

Our Lady of Grapes Chapel is a permanent Catholic chapel built into the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, California. Authorized as an oratory of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, it is open year-round and serves as the spiritual heart of the Clergy Hospitality program. The chapel operates on a simple but distinctive model: Catholic priests and bishops stay at the resort free of charge and in return celebrate daily Mass for hotel guests, the Sisters of Santa Rosa, and any local faithful who wish to attend. Outside the chapel, a digital link posts the current Mass schedule.

  • Built in 2006 with the original Meritage Resort & Spa
  • Authorized oratory of the Diocese of Santa Rosa
  • Daily Mass offered Monday through Sunday
  • Operated by the Clergy Hospitality program of the Napa Institute and Pacific Hospitality Group

History of the Chapel

The chapel was conceived by Napa Institute co-founder Timothy Busch as a real place of worship for traveling priests who visited Napa Valley with him, replacing the improvised hotel-room Masses he had experienced for years. It opened in 2006 with the resort and was approved by the then-Bishop of Santa Rosa. After 17 years of continuous use — including the massive demand of the annual Napa Institute Summer Conference — the chapel was expanded and renovated in 2022–2023, with a new altar blessed by Bishop Robert Vasa on June 9, 2023.

  • 2006: Chapel opens with the Meritage Resort, launching Clergy Hospitality
  • 2022: More than 100 Masses over four days during the Napa Institute Summer Conference exposes the limits of the original sacristy
  • 2023: Sacristy expanded, chapel renovated, and new altar blessed by Bishop Robert Vasa

Clergy Hospitality Program

Clergy Hospitality is the umbrella program that makes Our Lady of Grapes Chapel possible. Created by Timothy Busch and run jointly with the Napa Institute and Pacific Hospitality Group, it offers Catholic priests and bishops of good standing a complimentary room at the Meritage in exchange for celebrating daily Mass. Priest stays are limited to 7 nights and no more than 2 stays per location per year, and visiting priests must submit a letter of good standing to the Diocese of Santa Rosa before arrival.

  • Complimentary room, waived resort fee, and waived parking
  • Daily Mass obligation during the stay
  • Letters of good standing submitted to Fr. Moses Brown, Chancellor of the Diocese of Santa Rosa ([email protected]), with a CC to Perla Guevara-Otwell
  • Stays booked via [email protected]
  • Program also operates at Hotel Viata (Austin, TX) and Ko'a Kea Resort (Poipu Beach, Kauai), with a sister program at Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara

The Napa Institute Summer Conference

Each summer, the Napa Institute hosts a major Catholic conference at the Meritage built on three pillars: Community, Formation, and Liturgy. Our Lady of Grapes Chapel is the center of the liturgical life of the conference, with Mass celebrated almost every half hour during the week. The 15th annual Summer Conference was held July 23–27, 2025, and drew approximately 800 attendees, 15 bishops, and 50 priests, with around 130 Masses celebrated over five days.

  • Daily Mass in the morning, at noon, and in the evening, celebrated by a bishop
  • Tridentine Mass at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday
  • Masses in Latin (both Novus Ordo and Tridentine), English, and Eastern liturgy
  • An Ordinariate Mass in the English-language Tridentine use
  • Perpetual adoration and a Eucharistic procession
  • Confession and spiritual direction available throughout the week

Weddings at Our Lady of Grapes Chapel

Beyond its role as a worship space for priests and resort guests, Our Lady of Grapes Chapel is also used as a Catholic wedding venue at the Meritage Resort and Spa. The chapel's intimate setting pairs with the resort's reception venues — including the Estate Cave and the Vineyard Terrace — and the resort's catering department coordinates the full ceremony, rehearsal dinner, and guest activities.

Sisters of Santa Rosa and Chapel Sacristans

The Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa play a central role in the chapel's life, particularly during the Napa Institute Summer Conference, where they manage the Mass schedule, serve as sacristans, and provide music. They also assist with the Blessed Sacrament reservation that allows the oratory to remain active 24 hours a day when a priest is on campus.
