Parish Identity and History

Our Lady of Assumption was officially established as a parish in 1952 in the Diocese of El Paso. It was created during a wave of Catholic growth in the city under Bishop Sidney M. Metzger, alongside other parishes such as St. Pius and Blessed Sacrament that were encouraged by Monsignor Henry D. Buchanan from St. Joseph's. The parish's defining devotional treasure is its Blessed Sacrament Chapel, gifted by Bishop Metzger in 1953 — home to a Christi Moreno (suffering Christ) carved from Argentine Quebracho wood by sculptor Urbici Soler, the same artist who crafted the Christ the King monument on Mt. Cristo Rey.
