Parish History
Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish was established in 1918 to serve the coal-mining Catholics of Carbon County. Construction of the present church began in May 1919 and the building was dedicated on June 20, 1923, with Mass first celebrated in the basement during the four-year build. The church was erected under the direction of Father Alfredo F. Giovannoni, an Italian-born priest who served in Carbon County from 1917 to 1930. Notre Dame School opened on April 15, 1928, and on November 23, 2008 Bishop John C. Wester dedicated the parish Religious Education Center under Rev. Donald Hope. The parish celebrated the centennial of the church building in 2022 with year-long observances closing in 2023 with a Mass presided over by Bishop Oscar A. Solis, and the church has been designated a Jubilee 2025 pilgrimage site for the Diocese of Salt Lake City.
