History & Significance

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was first established in 1941 at the Carmelite parish of Our Lady of the Scapular of Mount Carmel in Manhattan, where wartime volunteers produced millions of scapulars for service members. In 1991, Cardinal John O'Connor approved the Carmelite Friars' petition to relocate the shrine to Middletown, New York, onto land the order had owned since 1917. Today it is operated by the Carmelite Friars of the Province of St. Elias and serves the Archdiocese of New York, perpetuating devotion to Mary under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and her brown scapular.

Shrine History

The Shrine was born on East 28th Street, Manhattan, where four Irish Carmelite friars founded the first U.S. Carmelite parish, Our Lady of the Scapular of Mount Carmel, on December 22, 1889. On July 16, 1941 the parish was designated the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel; during World War II its Scapular Militia produced millions of Brown Scapulars for U.S. servicemen and women. After the Carmelites merged the parish with neighboring St. Stephen the Martyr in 1990, Cardinal John O'Connor approved the Shrine's relocation to the former St. Albert's Seminary grounds in Middletown in 1991; it was incorporated as a not-for-profit in 1992.

The Fatima Connection

During the last Fatima apparition on October 13, 1917, Our Lady appeared to the three shepherd children also as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, holding the Brown Scapular. In 1947 two Carmelite priests of the Province of St. Elias met Sister Lucia dos Santos to hear her explain the scapular's importance at Fatima, and with Portuguese Carmelite help commissioned sculptor José Ferreira Thedim — who had carved the original Our Lady of Fatima in 1920 — to create a Mount Carmel statue to her specifications. The statue was blessed by the Bishop of Fatima on September 13, 1949, blessed by Cardinal Spellman in New York on July 16, 1950, returned to the Province when the Manhattan parish closed in 2014, and was carried in procession to Middletown in July 2015, where it was solemnly enthroned on February 4, 2017, the Fatima centennial.
