History of the Parish (Lịch Sử Giáo Xứ)

Mother of Perpetual Help Parish has its roots in the wave of Vietnamese Catholic refugees who resettled in North Texas after 1975. They were first gathered under the care of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Dallas as the Cộng Đoàn Thánh Phêrô (St. Peter's Community). In 1989, Bishop Thomas Tschoepe permitted a separate Vietnamese Mass in Garland at the Knights of Columbus Center. On June 15, 1990, Fr. Giuse Tống Thiện Liên was appointed to lead the Garland community, with Mass celebrated at Good Shepherd Church on North Garland Avenue. After Fr. Augustinô Nguyễn Huy Tưởng took over in October 1991, the community pooled resources to buy a former Protestant church at 2121 W. Apollo Road on November 22, 1992 — the first Vietnamese Catholic church building in the Diocese of Dallas. Bishop Charles Grahmann formally erected the parish on January 23, 1993, with the Redemptorists taking pastoral responsibility. The parish has since been a hub of Vietnamese Catholic life in North Texas, participating in the worldwide Redemptorist Year of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in 2015–2016.
