Mission Santa Clara de Asís is a consecrated Roman Catholic church located at the heart of Santa Clara University’s campus in Santa Clara, California. Established in 1777 by the Franciscan Order as one of California’s 21 missions, it was uniquely transferred to the Jesuits in 1851, making Santa Clara University the first higher education institution in California. Today, it functions as a Student Chapel tied to the university’s academic calendar and serves faculty, staff, alumni, and neighbors in worship. The church remains a central spiritual hub for the campus community.

History of the Mission

Established in 1777 by the Franciscan Order as part of the 21 Alta California Missions, Mission Santa Clara de Asís was the only one handed over to the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1851, making Santa Clara University the first higher education institution in California. Today, it continues to serve as a spiritual center for the university community, with liturgical offerings aligned with the academic schedule.

Visit the Mission

Open daily from 7 AM to 7 PM. Visitors are welcome to explore the historic church and grounds. Virtual tours and self-directed campus tours are available. School groups may book docent-led tours.

Events

The Mission hosts weddings, baptisms, funerals, memorial services, and special events such as the Feast of St. Ignatius on July 31 at 12 PM. Check the event calendar for upcoming celebrations.
