About Military Chapel, Fort Stewart

Military Chapel is the Roman Catholic worship community at Fort Stewart, Georgia, staffed by U.S. Army chaplains and a contract Roman Catholic priest endorsed by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, working with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah. The chapel serves the 3rd Infantry Division's home installation — the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi — and welcomes service members, family members, retirees and DoD civilians. As one posting on the installation calendar describes it, 'Join us for Catholic Mass every Sunday at 1130 at the Hunter Army Airfield Chapel. All are welcome to gather in worship, reflection, and fellowship as we come together to strengthen our faith and community.'

Fort Stewart Catholic Worship Schedule

Mass and the sacraments are offered at two principal sites on the installation: the Main Post Chapel at Fort Stewart and the Hunter Army Airfield Chapel in Savannah. Weekday Mass is celebrated Tue–Fri at the Main Post Chapel, with Holy Day Masses also scheduled there; Sunday Mass is offered at both chapels to accommodate families across the large post footprint.

Religious Support Office (RSO) & Chaplaincy Staff

All chapels on Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are administered by the Religious Support Office (RSO), whose mission is 'to ensure the free exercise of religion for Soldiers, Family Members, Retirees, and DoD Civilians' through worship, religious education, pastoral counseling, family life ministry and workshops. The office coordinates Army chaplains (endorsed by their faith groups) and contract clergy (such as the contract Roman Catholic priest endorsed by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, with faculties granted by the AMS Archbishop).

Catholic Faith Formation & Religious Education (CCD)

The Catholic Religious Education program at Fort Stewart parallels diocesan CCD models, structured around the September–May formation year. Classes are held at the Main Post Chapel on Sundays and at the Hunter Army Airfield Religious Education Center on Sundays for HAAF families. Sacramental preparation for First Communion and Confirmation is part of this ministry, coordinated through the Catholic Religious Education office.

Catholic Women of the Chapel (CWOC)

Catholic Women of the Chapel (CWOC) is the post-level fellowship and formation organization for Catholic women connected to the Fort Stewart community. It is part of the broader Protestant/Catholic Women of the Chapel tradition at Army installations and pairs regular Bible Study with fellowship.

Family Life Ministry & Pastoral Care

Pastoral care on Fort Stewart flows through the Unit Ministry Teams (UMTs) — each consisting of a chaplain and a Religious Affairs Specialist — who provide pastoral counseling, pre-marriage and marriage ministry, baptisms, retreats, hospital visitations, memorial ceremonies and awareness training. The Family Life Counseling Center, located at Marne Chapel, complements this with marriage, parenting and family counseling appointments.

Fort Stewart Chapel Locations & Access

Catholic worship on the installation is anchored in two chapel complexes. The Main Post Chapel (Bldg 500) sits centrally on Fort Stewart at the corner of Gulick Avenue and Divarty Road. The Hunter Army Airfield Chapel complex (Bldgs 145 and 149) is located at 368 Haley Avenue in Savannah. Access requires a current DoD ID or visitor pass from the installation gate.
